Functional Gut Test
Our Functional Gut Test measures key biomarkers, produced by gut bacteria, such as short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), which can be a good indicator of gut health.
Gut health is vital to overall health. Dysbiosis (an imbalance in the number or composition of the microbes in the gut) may result in a number of conditions and diseases. A healthy gut, on the other hand, can support your immune system, helping it to fight off pathogens as well as improve digestion and nutrient absorption, leading to better overall health.

What is measured?
Products of gut bacteria, such as short-chain fatty acids, include of acetate, propionate and butyrate. Short-chain fatty acids are vital for gut health, mental health and overall health, but the main reason that they have been selected is because they are the main product of bacterial fermentation, meaning they are a measure of how well the bacteria in the gut are producing key compounds. And this is specific to YOU, taking into account your age, diet, weight and lifestyle.
Who should test?
Those looking to understand how healthy their gut is by how effective the bacteria are at producing key chemicals.
Benefits of short-chain fatty acids
Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) are an important source of energy for the gut and liver cells, can help to strengthen the gut barrier and may provide protection against obesity and diseases such as type 2 diabetes. Short-chain fatty acids are also involved in the:
- Synthesis of cholesterol and fatty acids as well as glucose production
- Production of intestinal hormones, which can affect the brain and its functions
- Reduction of inflammation and regulation of the immune system, helping to protect against inflammatory bowel disease, cancer and asthma.
When and how to collect a stool sample?
Collect your stool sample anytime Monday to Sunday, when following your typical diet and lifestyle so that your results are representative of your normal routine. Try to avoid changing anything for a couple of weeks before collecting your sample as this can over-estimate your scores.
The instructions will be in your kit, but here is a digital version if needed.

Please also AVOID taking a sample if you:

- Are having a bout of illness
- Have digestive issues such as diarrhoea
- Have had a big night out

Reviews
“ I used the NeoVos tests recently and found them very easy to use. I highly recommend them and will definitely suggest them to my patients. With a great price point, I can test often and really monitor my patients progress, not just guessing their improvement. ”Lucia Stansbie - Nutritional Therapist
